RULES AND REGULATIONS
(1) Agreement: These rules govern the “Trash Talk Student” Contest (the “Contest”). Before entering the Contest, each entrant must review and be subject to the Contest Rules. No purchase is necessary to enter the Contest. The act of entering the Contest constitutes acceptance of the Contest Rules and the decisions of the Contest Judges. All decisions of the Contest Judges are final. The Contest Rules may be found at trashtalk.thestarcontests.com (the “Website”).
(2) Sponsor: The Contest Sponsor is the Toronto Star, a division of Toronto Star Newspapers Limited (the “Toronto Star).
(3) Eligibility: The Contest is open to all elementary and secondary school students within Ontario, except for employees or contractors, immediate families and anyone living with any employee of the Contest Sponsors or their corporate affiliates, advertising or promotional agencies or affiliates. Incomplete or illegible entries, bulk drop offs, photocopies, scanned copies, facsimiles or other mechanically or electronically reproduced entries will not be accepted and will be disqualified. Only one Toronto Star prize of over $500.00 value can be won per household in any 12-month period. NOTE: although individual students or classes are eligible to submit their entries, the prizes will be awarded to the classes and schools, not the individual students.
(4) Contest: The Contest period runs from 9:00 a.m. EST, Saturday, April 17, 2010 to 11:55 p.m. EST, Friday, May 21, 2010 (the “Contest Period”). The judging period for all entries will take place during the week of May 23rd with the Grand Prize winner selected and contacted by Tuesday, June 1, 2010. The winner will be announced in the Toronto Star on Saturday, June 5, 2010.
(5) How to Enter:
Email your entry to trashtalk@thestar.ca or mail in your entry in writing with photos or drawings to: Trash Talk Contest, New in Homes & Condos, Toronto Star, One Yonge Street, 5th floor, Toronto, ON M5E 1E6.
Your entry must include your name, school, your address or your school’s address, email and a phone number where you or your teacher can be reached. You my attach photos or drawings to the email (in jpg or pdf format).

The Contest Sponsors are not responsible for late entries and no entries will be permitted after the final contest deadline. Only one entry per person is permitted. The odds of being selected as a potential winner depend on the total number of eligible entries received. In order to win, the potential winner must also correctly answer a mathematical skill-testing question.
Winners will be contacted by June 1, 2010, by telephone and/or e-mail, during regular business hours. If the potential winner cannot be reached within 24 hours from the time of initial contact by a representative from the Toronto Star, an alternative entry will be selected until such time as a potential winner satisfies the terms of this section.
(6) PRIZES: There are a total of three prizes to be won as follows:
First Prize
- One (1) President's Choice Garden Centre $250 gift certificate. www.pc.ca
- One (1) DVD of Andrew Nisker’s Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home for one school’s use. Value: $90.
- One (1) case of 12 custom-labeled packages of organic, fair-trade coffee (300g) for a school fundraiser of the winner’s choice from The Creemore Coffee Co. Value: $144. www.creemorecoffee.com
- Three (3) roomy organic-cotton reusable bags, including two Canvas Artisan Bags, showcasing the talents of two Eastern Ontario artists, and one large Market Bag with shoulder strap from Steward Bags. Value: $55.
Third Prize:

Total approx. value of Second Prize is $500.
Based on availability. If exact prize is not available at time of prize redemption, contest organizers reserve the right to substitute another similar prize. Winners will have until Dec. 31, 2010 to redeem the prize.
(7) Privacy: We will use personal contact information to administer the Contest, including contacting, announcing and promoting the Prize winners. Winner information will be disclosed to the prize provider for fulfillment. In addition, we may use this information to send you offers or information from us, our affiliates and from selected sponsors or advertisers (“Marketing Offers”). If you do not wish to receive Marketing Offers, you may opt-out at any time by: following the instructions at the bottom of any email Marketing Offer you receive, informing your telemarketer at the time you are called with a Marketing Offer, calling Customer Service at 1-800-279-0181 and requesting that your personal information not be used for Marketing Offers, or emailing Customer Service at privacy@thestar.ca and requesting that your personal information not be used for Marketing Offers. This Contest is run in compliance with the Toronto Star’s privacy code, which may be found in full at www.thestar.com.
(8) Banning: The sponsors may, in their sole discretion, prohibit any person from entering any contest whom they believe to be abusing the Contest Rules. Such abuse includes entering false information and entering more than one entry per day.
(9) Declaration and Release: Prior to receiving the prize, the winner will be required to show valid photo ID, must sign a declaration of eligibility and compliance with the Contest Rules. The winner will be required to sign a release and consent to publicity form, releasing and indemnifying the Contest Sponsors and their respective parent(s), subsidiaries, affiliates and/or related companies and each of their officers, directors, shareholders, employees, advisors, assignees, agents, licensees, representatives, advertising, media buying and promotional agencies from any liability in connection with the Contest and/or the Prizes, including but not limited to injuries, death, damages or losses of any kind resulting from the Contest, including but not limited to acceptance or use of the Prize. Prior to receiving the Prize, the prize winner shall each agree to have his/her name, city of residence, photograph, voice and/or image used in any and all forms of media, without further compensation by the Contest Sponsors and/or their advertising and promotional agencies. If the Toronto Star representative does not receive the signed form as contemplated herein, back within 24 hours, then the Toronto Star may draw for another potential winner and the first winner will have no further claim to the prize.
(10) General: The Contest Sponsors reserve the right in their sole discretion to cancel, suspend or modify the Contest or the Contest Rules at any time without notice. All prizes must be accepted as awarded, are non-transferable and are not convertible to cash. All prizes are awarded as is and no warranties or guarantees are implied or expressed, beyond standard warranties. Contest Sponsors are not liable for any errors or negligence that may arise in connection with this Contest or the Prize. The Sponsors reserve the right to substitute any prize with a prize of equal or greater value. The Contest Sponsors are not responsible for lost or misdirected or late or ineligible entries. Winner must be willing to accept prize delivery upon Contest Sponsor’s terms and delivery times.
(11) Prize Suppliers: All prize suppliers’ involvement with this contest is limited to supplying the Prizes. Prize suppliers shall in no way be liable or responsible for the administration of this contest with the exception of the awarding of the specific prizes they are responsible for supplying.
(12) Subject to Applicable Laws: This Contest is governed by and subject to all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws and regulations and is void where prohibited. This Contest is governed by the laws of Ontario and the laws of Canada applicable therein. By participating in this Contest, entrants agree to be bound by these Contest Rules and the decisions of the Judges in awarding the prize, which decisions shall be final and binding upon all entrants. Failure to comply with these Contest Rules may void the entrant’s rights to any Prize. Interpretation of these Contest Rules by the Contest Sponsors shall be final and binding.
